Last Wednesday night I did a group Mountain Bike ride and it came as no great shock after the morning's experience that I crashed and burned. However, I can't remember crashing and burning that hard, ever! A few days without any real carb intake while trying to maintain my usual exercise program took its toll in a big way. Big cramps, a burning sensation in every muscle at once and absolutely no energy at all. I was hurting everywhere as if my body was trying to consume itself from the inside out. Not a great feeling...
I weighed myself the next day and was down 4.5kg which equates to over a kilogram per day!Look out Biggest Loser contestants! However, I suspected heaps of fluid loss as is normal when restricting carbs, but I did have to hitch my belt up another notch so I hoped it would stay off.
I didn't have the strength or energy to take the bike out on Thursday as planned so I took some advice to increase carbs to fuel my workouts a bit better so I added a some multi-grain bread and some rice crackers. I also took my old geared bike out in lieu of the single speed bike so I could spin up the hills instead of having to hammer them and hopefully avoid going anaerobic as often and conserve energy. That seemed to help a lot and I had beautiful rides on both Friday morning and Saturday for 1.5 hours, albeit at a slower pace than usual.
Then I screwed up a bit.
Later on Saturday I had a day out with my youngest son and couldn't resist some bad choices like Maccas and chips and ended up finishing the day with more than twice the amount of calories I should have had. I also ate a little more than I should have on Sunday night after another great Mountain bike ride in the afternoon.
The good news is, while I maybe could have added another kilo or two if I hadn't have strayed so far from the path on the weekend, I managed to hold onto that 4.5 kgs.
The bad news is basically that's just the Christmas excess now dealt with and I'm down to my "normal" weight now and it might get hard from here if past experience is anything to go by... However, I'm hoping that's been either just co-incidence or an issue with sleep, hydration or nutrition and this time will be different.
This week's meal plan has a lot more carbs which I'm hoping will be just enough to fuel my workouts better while keeping the cravings to a minimum, but not so much that I don't lose weight.
